Pure Tone Audiometry

Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is a standard, subjective behavioral test used by audiologists to determine the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss. Conducted in a soundproof booth, it measures the softest sound (threshold) an individual can hear across various frequencies (\(250\text{--}8000\text{\ Hz}\)) using headphones (air conduction) and a mastoid oscillator (bone conduction).
